With many of us spending more time at home, we’ve been channeling our creative juices into making social content. One app that has been growing popularity is TikTok. Though many believe that this app is only for teens, there are users of all ages and backgrounds on the app. Honestly, there’s a place for everyone on TikTok.
I’ll be the first to admit that from a creator standpoint, TikTok takes some time getting used to. All of the viral TikTok videos with creative transitions and plot twists doesn’t happen overnight. You have to take your time getting familiar with the app to make you feel like an official TikToker. Whether you’re thinking about starting a TikTok to show off your cooking skills or your dance moves, we’ve outlined some tips for TikTok to help you get started on making content that you can be proud of.
Similar to Instagram’s “Explore Page,” the “For You” page on TikTok consists of content handpicked especially for you. The more you like (or dislike) content on your “For You” page, the better TikTok gets to understand your interests and suggest content that you’ll love. Additionally, commenting and liking content on this page will drive other people to watch your TikTok videos.
FYI: If someone comments “FYP” on a video that you upload on TikTok, that means they discovered it on their For You Page!
Of all the tips for using TikTok, this one may be the most essential. TikTok only allows 140 characters for captions, so you should keep them short and sweet. One of the most important things to include are hashtags for people to find your videos. The key is to use only those hashtags that pertain to the content of your video. Otherwise, people may scroll right past.
For example, if your video doesn’t include your dog, don’t tag #TikTokDogs in your caption.
Similar to hashtags, your videos are also discoverable by the sounds (music, skit, etc. available on the app) that you use in the video. It appears that using a trending sound can also increase the chances of your TikTok video getting the views it deserves.
Don’t be afraid to play around with effects and filters in the app.
Popular Filters: B6 and G6
Popular Effects: Green Screen, Contacts, Freeze Frame (always check what’s trending!)
If you’re looking to make a TikTok masterpiece, the timer will be your best friend. It essentially allows you to record in bits just in case you need to switch characters, clothes, locations, etc. throughout your TikTok video.
Have fun, take your time and don’t be discouraged when you’re starting out. These are just some basic tips for TikTok to help you get started—get to posting!
